Meritorious Faculty Award

Nominate an alumnus or faculty member

Deadline is January 31, 2012.

The Meritorious Faculty Award is presented to a faculty member who has demonstrated excellence in the areas of teaching and research. Recipients exemplify MSU’s commitment to the land-grant mission of teaching, research and outreach through their dedication to professional, community and/or MSU service.

Anyone may submit a nomination.

The Board of Directors of the CNS Alumni Association selects the recipient and presents the award at the annual alumni awards held in conjunction with Science University each April.

2011 Award Recipient

Robin Buell

Robin Buell

C. Robin Buell
Department of Plant Biology

Robin Buell is a leader in plant genomics at MSU, and has distinguished herself as a researcher and educator.

Research in the Buell laboratory focuses on high throughput sequencing, functional genomics, comparative genomics, and bioinformatics of plants and plant pathogens.

Buell works on model species including rice as well as crop species such as potato. Using a suite of automated, semi-automated, and manual computational methods, she and her research group have annotated the rice genome. And, in 2009, she was part of the consortium that released the first draft sequence of the potato genome. These projects generated large-scale databases and resources for the scientific community, namely the Rice Annotation Database and the Solancaeae Comparative Genomics Resource.

Buell’s work on plant pathogens has resulted in the Comprehensive Phytopathogen Genome Resource, which is populated with all plant pathogen genome sequence data including viruses, bacteria, fungi, stramenopiles, and nematodes and provides genome/annotation data-mining and visualization tools.

Since 1999, she has been an author on more than 90 publications, and is currently the Principal Investigator or Project Director on six grants; the co-PI or co-PD on five; and a collaborator on one. In 2008, she was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Before coming to MSU in 2007, she spent nine years at the Institute for Genomic Research in Maryland. She was a postdoctoral fellow at MSU and the Carnegie Institution, and an assistant professor at Louisiana State University.
