Residential Initiative on the Study of the Environment (RISE)

The RISE program is for MSU students interested in stewardship of the environment. RISE provides students a community and curriculum focused on the environment as students get their feet wet and hands dirty applying their knowledge to real problems and projects.

RISE Scholarships Now Available for 2013-14

We are pleased to announce the availability of the Donald F. Koch and Barbara J. Sawyer-Koch Environmental Studies Spartan Scholarship Challenge awards.  RISE will be awarding two four-year scholarships of $3000/year for students who demonstrate financial need by filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Eligible students must also have completed the RISE application and demonstrate a commitment to environmental studies and sustainability during their high school years.  If you wish to have your application reviewed for this scholarship and have completed the FAFSA application please send Dr. Laurie Thorp an email indicating your interest no later than April 20th.

RISE has moved to the newly renovated Bailey Hall in the Brody Neighborhood!

Go green now means you can live green!
Bailey Hall features the following:

  • LEED (Leadership in Energy Environment Design) Certified Residence Hall
  • A/C within the building
  • Community kitchen and game room
  • Passive solar greenhouse for organic herb and salad production
  • Green housekeeping which includes low VOC cleaning practices
  • Adjacent to Brody Square Cafeteria (offering 10 different stations of specialty food such as sushi, vegetarian, vegan and more!)
  • Over 75% of the spaces in Brody have access to natural daylight and 90% of spaces will have views to the outside of building

Two Ways to be Involved in RISE:

  1. Residential Program (for incoming freshmen)
    Students live in a community of RISE students on designated RISE floors in Bailey Hall and receive many unique benefits to enhance their education. More details…
  2. Environmental Studies Specialization
    This specialization is ongoing and completion of the specialization is added to the student’s records when course requirements are fulfilled. Students do not need to be in the residential program to add this specialization. Any student with a major in one of the participating colleges can be involved in RISE and have this specialization added to their major. More details and curriculum…

RISE Seminars

RISE offers two seminars (NSC 192 and NSC 292) as part of the Specialization in Environmental Studies.

These distinct seminars allow students to explore environmental issues through field trips, guest speakers, community projects and a senior level integrative experience.  Seminar details…
