Litchman Honored by Obama with Presidential Early Career Award

Associate Professor Elena Litchman was among 94 researchers honored by President Obama today as a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers. Ten Federal departments and agencies join [...]

Evolution Keeps Sex Determination Flexible

Researchers studied adaptations in sexual determination of 50 generations of female/hermaphrodite nematodes (right) and male nematodes (left), and their findings show the worms evolved rapidly to compensate for the effects of harmful mutations. African Carnivore Research Expands

For more than two decades, Zoology Professor Kay Holekamp, director of MSU’s Ecology, Environmental Biology and Behavior Program, has been studying spotted hyenas in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya, and a recent NSF grant is expanding the program to include carnivores inhabiting the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. The recently awarded International Research Experiences for Students [...]

Evolution Research Shows Adaptability Over Short-Term Fitness

Richard Lenski, Hannah Distinguished Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics, and colleagues published research in Science showing that more adaptable bacteria oriented toward long-term improvement prevailed over competitors that held a short-term advantage. Their research of evolution in action could explain a number of important patterns in nature.     When it comes to survival [...]

50,000 Generations of E. Coli Provide Data on Evolution

Walking into Richard Lenski’s lab in the Biomedical and Physical Sciences Building provides a panoramic view of Spartan Stadium, the MSU Dairy Store and the Capitol dome. The unassuming incubator humming away at the end of a lab bench and the dozen gyrating flasks yield no clues to their notoriety and importance. Richard Lenski, Hannah [...]

CNS Grad Student Receives DOE Fellowship
